I am proud to be a Singaporean. Having travelled to many countries in various continents, and having lived in Hong Kong for five years, I have no doubt that my country is a relatively better place to call “home”. Singapore, as we all know it today, would not be quite the same if not for what Mr Lee Kuan Yew and his colleagues have done.

I can think of many reasons why Singaporeans should be grateful to Mr Lee. He set an excellent example in living the following three values, which I believe are key to Singapore’s success in the next 50 years, and beyond.

*Importance of taking calculated risks, and believing in your own potential.  He first demonstrated this trait publicly in 1965. Singaporeans are infamous for being “kiasu”. I hope that even more Singaporeans will slowly but surely eradicate this mentality henceforth.

*Be a lifelong learner, and to never stop using your mind. Mr Lee said he learnt to use the computer at age 70. He also stayed active, contributing to Singapore in meaningful ways, even after stepping down as prime minister in 1990.

* To love your life partner to eternity. Parents are one of the bedrocks of a strong family. And strong families are one of the key pillars of a successful nation. Mr Lee’s lifelong love and devotion to his late wife Kwa Geok Choo are inspirational.

I am saddened by the death of Mr Lee, and thank him for the life lessons he has left behind.

Paul Heng
